Calling the US

Free calls to the USA from abroad: what is free, what costs cents, and how to dial

Part of: How to make international calls online: dialing, rates and free options

TL;DR

From abroad, a call to the US is reliably free only app-to-app, such as WhatsApp Web to a WhatsApp user [1], or over your US carrier's Wi-Fi Calling where the plan includes calls home [2]. Free web dialers reach ordinary US numbers, but only for short calls a few times a day [3][4]. Longer calls cost from $0.01 a minute [5]; my guide to making international calls online covers other countries.

Key facts

Which ways to call the US from abroad are really free?

Three routes cost nothing per call: an app-to-app call, your US plan's Wi-Fi Calling where the carrier includes calls home, and a free web dialer for a short call to an ordinary number. Google Voice is not on that list: Google's help says a US number used in another country is charged international rates [6].

From each service's own pages on . I placed no calls.

WhatsApp announced calls in WhatsApp Web on 28 July 2026, free and with no time limit [11]; its help center still says the feature is rolling out gradually [1]. Google Meet dials phone numbers only in meetings organized through a Google Workspace account [12]. I left TextNow out: its terms say the service is intended for people living in the US or Canada [13].

Does Google Voice give free calls to the US while you travel?

Not reliably. Google says almost all calls to the US and Canada are free when you call from the US, and that a US number calling from another country is charged international rates [6]. Its rate card still lists the United States at zero [14]. I did not sign in from abroad, so I treat a free call as possible, not promised.

Two checks before you rely on it. Place the call from voice.google.com or the Voice app over Wi-Fi or data, because a call started in the phone's own dialer uses your mobile plan [15]. Then read the message Voice shows: it gives the cost when a call isn't free, and on a phone, no message means the call isn't going through Voice and your carrier may bill it [16][17].

You can't open an account abroad, because personal Google Voice is US-only [18]. Countries where Voice calls are blocked, keeping the number active and keeping it after a move are covered in my look at Google Voice outside the US.

Can your US phone plan call home for free?

Over Wi-Fi it can. Verizon charges nothing for Wi-Fi Calling to US numbers on plans with unlimited talk and text, and calling back to the US from abroad is free, though the Wi-Fi network may charge for access [2]. Over a foreign cellular network it gets expensive: AT&T's pay-per-use talk rate abroad is $4 a minute outside Canada and Mexico [19].

On Verizon, an iPhone can turn Wi-Fi Calling on only while connected to Verizon's network in the US, so do it before you leave [2]. TravelPass, at $12 a day in most TravelPass countries, also covers calls back to the US, and Verizon charges it only on days you use the phone there [20][20]. Wi-Fi Calling belongs to your mobile line, not a browser tab; I explain how the two differ separately.

Can a free web dialer call a US number?

Yes, for a short call. Call2Friends and PopTox list the US as a free destination [21][22], and Globfone gives a small daily credit for calls to 'supported countries', though I found no published list of them [23][24]. Each sets a limit: a two-minute cap, a daily count, or a sign-up that asks for your phone number and a card. The person in the US may also see a number that isn't yours.

Read on . Call2Friends' US limits held at both of my checks; its Mexico list changed within hours [30].

Call2Friends says free calls use cheaper routes and can sound worse than paid ones [3]. I don't link three other paid browser dialers: StartACall's terms still carry a template placeholder for the governing law [31], HelloAirDial's terms name no company or governing-law country [32], and MySecondLine's homepage shows placeholder text [33]. For free dialers to other countries, see my round-up of free dialers and their limits.

What does a call to the US cost if you pay?

About $0.01 to $0.02 a minute in a browser dialer. On the rate pages I read on , Yolla listed US calls from $0.01 a minute [5], Call2Friends $0.016 [34] and TwinPhone $0.02 [35]. For one short call, the smallest payment matters more than the rate.

Paid calls to a US number from abroad
OptionPriceSmallest paymentA 20-minute call
YollaFrom $0.01 a minute [5]$4 [5]From $0.20
Call2Friends$0.016 a minute, most area codes [34]$5 [36]$0.32
TwinPhone$0.02 a minute [35]$10 [37]$0.40
AT&T roaming, no package$4 a minute outside Canada and Mexico [19]None$80
Verizon TravelPass$12 a day in most TravelPass countries [20]One day$12

The last column is my arithmetic from the listed rate, before taxes.

Yolla also sells 200 US minutes for $0.99, valid for 30 days and renewing automatically until you cancel [5]. Its homepage says the people you call see your own number [38], but its web-calling page doesn't say which number Yolla Web shows, and Yolla Web can't receive calls [39].

TwinPhone, which sponsors this site, suits someone with no US plan who would rather not give a phone number: sign-up takes an email or Google account, and calls run in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave or Safari [40]. Against it: no free tier [41], a US rate twice Yolla's 'from' price, a shared caller ID that can't be called back unless you pay for a number or a verified caller ID [42], and '145+ countries' on one page but '165 destinations' on another [40][35].

How do you dial a US number from abroad?

Dial the international prefix of the country you are in, then 1, then the 10-digit US number, area code first [8][8]. In a browser dialer you skip the prefix and type the country code 1 before the number, the rule Google Voice gives for its web app [6]. 011 is the prefix for calls leaving the US, so it is not the one to use abroad [8].

A is the area code, X the local number. Prefixes are from the ITU's 'Dialling procedures' list (2011, its latest edition), read on .

Canada shares country code 1 with the US [43]. If you are in Britain, my UK guide also covers browser calls from the UK to the US.

Which option fits your call?

Calling someone who has WhatsApp costs nothing on WhatsApp Web [1]. For one quick call to a phone number, a free dialer will do if two minutes is enough [7]. For a bank, a landline or a long chat, pay $0.01 to $0.02 a minute in a browser dialer, or use your plan's Wi-Fi Calling where calls home are included.

Frequently asked questions

Can I call the US for free from another country?

Yes, three ways cost nothing per call: an app-to-app call such as WhatsApp Web to a WhatsApp user [1], your US carrier's Wi-Fi Calling where the plan includes calls home [2], or a free web dialer such as Call2Friends, which allows 120 seconds to listed US area codes once or twice a day [7][3]. Longer calls to a phone number cost from $0.01 a minute [5].

Is Google Voice free when I call the US from abroad?

Google doesn't promise it. Its help ties free US and Canada calls to calling from the US and says a US number used in another country is charged international rates [6]. If a call isn't free, Voice shows a message with the cost [16][17], so read it before you talk. You also can't sign up from abroad [18].

Can I call a US toll-free number from abroad?

From a browser, yes on Call2Friends. A free call to a US toll-free number may last up to 3,600 seconds, an hour, and a paid one costs $0.008 a minute [7][34]. The free tier still allows only one or two calls a day per IP address [3].

Do I dial 011 to call the US from abroad?

No. 011 is the prefix for calls leaving the US [8]. Abroad, use the local prefix: 00 in the UK, India, Mexico and the Philippines, 0011 in Australia and 010 in Japan [8][8][8][8][8][8], then 1 and the 10-digit number, area code first. In a browser dialer you skip the prefix and type +1 before the number.

Can people in the US call me back while I am abroad?

Only on a number or app that rings where you are. A Google Voice number rings in the browser while you are signed in with the window open [46]. TwinPhone rents US, Canadian and Puerto Rico numbers from $3.19 a month, with incoming calls at $0.02 a minute [47][48]. WhatsApp contacts can call you back in the app [9].

How much data does a call to the US use?

Google puts a Google Voice call at about 0.2 MB a minute, so 30 minutes use about 6 MB [15]. I found no figure for the other services. On a phone, start the call in the app over Wi-Fi or data; a call started in the phone's own dialer uses your mobile plan [15].

Can I still use Skype credit to call the US?

Only leftover credit, through the Skype Dial Pad for remaining paid users: Skype retired on 5 May 2025 and new Skype Credit can't be bought [10]. Microsoft Teams (free), its successor, has no paid calling plans [10], so a paid browser dialer is the nearest replacement.
