WhatsApp costs

WhatsApp international calls: free app to app, with three catches

Part of: WhatsApp Web calls: voice and video from a browser tab in 2026

TL;DR

Yes, if both people use WhatsApp: a voice or video call to another country costs nothing from WhatsApp, whether you place it in the phone app or by calling on WhatsApp Web [1][2][3]. You pay for the internet connection instead, which matters on mobile data and when roaming [4]. A number that isn't on WhatsApp is dialled through your mobile carrier, and carrier charges may apply [5].

Key facts

Which WhatsApp calls abroad are free, and which are not?

WhatsApp's help calls its voice and video calls free, even when the contact is in another country [1][2], and the Web calling announcement promises one-to-one and group calls at no cost [6]. A group voice call takes up to 32 people [9]. What can still cost money is the data connection, and any call that leaves WhatsApp for an ordinary phone number.

What a WhatsApp call to another country costs you
CallCharge from WhatsAppWhat you may still pay
WhatsApp to WhatsApp in the phone app, voice or videoNone [1][2]Mobile data, or nothing extra on Wi-Fi [4]
The same call while your phone is roamingNoneRoaming data charges, which may differ from home rates [4]
WhatsApp Web in a browser tabNone [3]The computer's internet connection
A guest joining your call link from a computerNone [7]The guest's own connection
Keypad call to a number that isn't on WhatsAppNot a WhatsApp callCarrier and data charges may apply [1]
911 or another emergency numberNot possible [1]Use a mobile or landline instead

I read WhatsApp's help pages and blog posts on . None quotes a price for calls to other WhatsApp users; the web-calling announcement promises no time limit and no cost [6].

How much does a WhatsApp call abroad cost in data?

On Wi-Fi, an international WhatsApp call costs nothing beyond the connection you already have. On mobile data it draws on your allowance, because WhatsApp uses the same connection as web browsing and email, and while roaming your carrier's charges may differ from home rates [4]. I found no per-minute data figure on WhatsApp's help pages, so the app's own meter is the reliable way to see what your calls used.

Cutting data costs while roaming

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi whenever you can; WhatsApp recommends it to avoid paying for data [4].
  2. Without an international data plan, turn off mobile data and data roaming in your phone's settings [4].
  3. Turn off media auto-download over mobile data and roaming, so chat photos and videos don't use the allowance you need for calls [4].
  4. On a one-to-one video call over mobile data, turn on Data Saver: the video you receive drops in quality so the call uses less data. It doesn't apply to voice or group calls, and it switches off when the call ends [2].
  5. After the call, open Settings > Storage and data > Network usage in WhatsApp to see how much data it used [4].

If you buy a local SIM for the trip, WhatsApp keeps working on your home number, but re-verifying the account needs the original SIM in the phone [4], so pack it.

Are WhatsApp calls abroad free from a laptop too?

Yes. WhatsApp's help says Web calling lets you call contacts for free, even if they are in another country, over your computer's internet connection [3]. Calling in a browser tab launched on and was still rolling out gradually when I checked on [6][3], so some accounts don't have the call button yet.

WhatsApp says calling works best in Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, and points to its Windows and Mac apps for anyone who prefers a native app [3]. If the button isn't there, my notes on a missing WhatsApp Web call button go through the likely causes.

How do you save a foreign number for WhatsApp calls?

Save the contact in full international format: a plus sign, the country code, then the full number with any leading 0 removed [10]. Leave out the exit code you would dial on an ordinary phone, such as 011 from the US [11], because WhatsApp asks you to drop special calling codes [10]. If someone still doesn't appear, WhatsApp's help for missing international contacts points back to this format [12].

Saving a foreign number in WhatsApp: examples
CountryCodeWritten locallySave it in WhatsApp as
United States, Canada+1 [13](408) XXX-XXXX+1 408 XXX XXXX [10]
United Kingdom, mobile+44 [13]07XXX XXXXXX [14]+44 7XXX XXXXXX [15]
India+91 [13]With a leading 0 [11]+91, then the number without the 0
Philippines+63 [13]With a leading 0 [11]+63, then the number without the 0
Mexico+52 [13]10 digits, e.g. 55 XXXX XXXX [16]+52 55 XXXX XXXX [16] (see the note)

WhatsApp's help still says Mexican numbers need a 1 after +52 [10]. Mexico's regulator at the time, the IFT, says a call from abroad uses 52 plus the 10-digit number, mobile or landline, and tells people to delete a 1 prefix from saved numbers [16][16]. The switch began in 2019 and the old prefixes stopped working in August 2020 [17][16]. I would save the 10-digit form and try +52 1 only if the contact doesn't show up.

An ordinary phone call needs the same codes; exit codes and per-minute prices by country are in my guide to calling abroad online.

What if the person abroad doesn't have WhatsApp?

There are two routes. If they have a computer, send a WhatsApp call link: guests join free from a desktop browser with just a name, once you admit them [7]. If they only have a phone, WhatsApp can't make the call free: from the keypad, a number that isn't on WhatsApp goes through your mobile carrier, and carrier charges may apply [1][5].

  1. In WhatsApp Web, open the Calls tab, click New call link and choose Voice or Video [18]. Only someone with a WhatsApp account can create one [7].
  2. Copy the link and share it any way you like; anyone who has it can ask to join, so send it only to people you trust [18].
  3. The guest opens it in Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge on a desktop computer and types a name [8][7].
  4. Admit them from the waiting room: guests always need approval [18].

Guests can't see other participants' phone numbers, send messages or add anyone [7]. The announcement promises no time limit [7], but the Web help says that, apart from one waiting-room case, a call with guests continues until everyone leaves or 60 minutes have passed [18], so plan for a possible cut-off at one hour.

Call their phone number instead

Guests need a desktop browser [8], so someone with only a landline or a basic mobile can't join; you need a service that calls phone numbers. Why WhatsApp itself can't is covered in my post on WhatsApp and landlines. Three options work in a browser; I read their rates on :

Per-minute prices
ServiceIndiaMexicoUK mobile
Google Voice$0.02[19]$0.01[19]$0.01[19]
TwinPhone$0.08[20]$0.02–$0.04[20]$0.12[20]
Yollafrom $0.0239[21]from $0.011[22]from $0.10[23]

Per minute, lowest published rate on the date checked. Scroll sideways on a phone.

What can't a WhatsApp call do?

Three limits matter for calls abroad. WhatsApp can't reach 911 or any other emergency service [1][32]. It needs an account registered to a current mobile number [32], and VoIP and landline numbers can't register on the standard app [33]. And I found no official list of countries where WhatsApp calling is blocked; the Terms carry no country list at all [32], so I could not confirm availability country by country.

Keep a mobile or a landline within reach for emergencies. My guide to emergency numbers from a laptop or browser sets out what works where.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp charge for international calls?

No. WhatsApp charges nothing for voice or video calls between WhatsApp accounts, even when the other person is in another country [1][2]. I found no per-minute rate or calling plan on its pages. What you may pay for is the data: the call runs over Wi-Fi or mobile data, and data charges may apply, especially while roaming [4].

Do WhatsApp calls use my phone plan's minutes?

Not for calls to other WhatsApp users. WhatsApp says voice calls use your phone's internet connection rather than your plan's minutes [1], which makes them internet (VoIP) calls. The exception is the keypad: if you dial a number that isn't on WhatsApp, the call goes through your mobile carrier, and carrier and data charges may apply [5].

Are WhatsApp calls free when I'm traveling abroad?

WhatsApp still charges nothing, but your carrier may charge for roaming data, at rates that can differ from home [4]. WhatsApp recommends Wi-Fi where possible and, without an international data plan, turning off mobile data and data roaming [4]. If you switch to a local SIM, WhatsApp keeps working on your home number, but re-verifying the account needs the original SIM [4].

Can I make international WhatsApp calls from my laptop?

Yes. WhatsApp's help says WhatsApp Web, at web.whatsapp.com, lets you call contacts for free even if they are in another country, and it points to the Windows and Mac apps as a native option [3]. Calling in a browser tab launched on and is rolling out gradually, so some accounts don't have the call button yet [6]. WhatsApp says calling works best in Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox [3].

Can someone without WhatsApp join my call?

Yes, from a computer. Create a call link and send it; the guest opens it in a desktop browser, types a name and waits for you to admit them [7][18]. Guests pay nothing and need no account [7], but only a WhatsApp user can create the link, and someone with only a landline can't join this way.

Is there a time limit on WhatsApp calls abroad?

Not for calls between WhatsApp accounts, as far as I found: the voice and video call help pages I read state no cap, and the Web calling announcement promises calls with no time limits [6]. Calls with guests who join by link are the one to watch. The guest-calling announcement also says no time limit [7], but the Web help says such a call continues until everyone leaves or 60 minutes have passed [18].

Do I need the country code to call someone abroad on WhatsApp?

Yes. Save the contact with a plus sign, the country code and the full number, dropping any leading 0 or special calling code; WhatsApp's own example is a US contact saved as +1 408 XXX XXXX [10]. If the contact doesn't appear in WhatsApp after that, check the format again before anything else [12].
