Can WhatsApp call a landline or a number without WhatsApp?

No. Every WhatsApp calling page I read describes calls between WhatsApp users, or with guests who join by link. For a number that isn't on WhatsApp, the iPhone help says the call goes through your mobile carrier, and the Android help offers to dial it, with carrier charges ^[2][9]. A home landline can't even hold an ordinary WhatsApp account: WhatsApp refuses landlines at registration ^[3].

Why WhatsApp stops at its own users

WhatsApp calls are internet calls between people using WhatsApp. Your account is tied to a mobile number ^[12], but that number works as an address, not a phone line: WhatsApp says voice calls use your internet connection rather than your plan's minutes ^[9]. Reaching a landline means converting the call into a regular telephone signal ^[13], a step WhatsApp doesn't offer.

Services that take that step charge for it. Yolla, for example, makes calls between its app users free but bills calls to mobiles and landlines per minute ^[14]. WhatsApp sells nothing of the kind: its web calls come "at no cost" ^[15], and I found no paid calling option on any WhatsApp page I read. The nearest thing WhatsApp offers is a guest link: since October 14, 2026, someone without an account can join a call by opening a link in a computer browser, once the host admits them ^[1]. That still needs the other person at a computer, so it does nothing for a landline; the steps are in joining a WhatsApp call without an account.

Skype used to sell credit for calls to phone numbers, but Microsoft retired Skype on May 5, 2025 and stopped selling Skype Credit ^[16]. WhatsApp did not take over that role; I cover what took Skype's place separately.

What happens when you type a normal number into WhatsApp?

If the person uses WhatsApp, you get a free WhatsApp call. If not, the phone app offers to dial the number through your carrier or to invite them to WhatsApp ^[2][9]. On a computer there is no carrier to fall back on: the Web help describes calls only from a chat with a contact ^[4].

The keypad on iPhone and Android

1. Open the Calls tab and open the keypad ^[2][9].
2. Enter the number and tap the call button. If the number has WhatsApp, a free WhatsApp call starts.
3. If it doesn't, an iPhone shows a pop-up saying the call will go through your mobile carrier, and Android offers Dial plus the number ^[2][9].
4. Confirm to make an ordinary call billed by your carrier, or invite the person to WhatsApp instead.

Save the number in international format

When someone you know uses WhatsApp but doesn't show up, check how the number is saved in your address book. For a number in another country, WhatsApp asks for a plus sign, the country code and the full number, without leading zeros or special calling codes ^[17][11].

What to use instead to call a landline from a computer

Use a service that connects to the phone network. From the US, Google Voice and TextNow call US and Canadian numbers free (Google says almost all) ^[5][19]. Elsewhere, or for numbers abroad, a pay-per-minute browser dialer such as Yolla or TwinPhone does it, and free web dialers cover a short call or two a day. The person you call needs no app ^[20][14].

For numbers abroad, here are the published per-minute rates of Google Voice, TwinPhone and Yolla; Google Voice's apply only to US accounts ^[6].

Google Voice and TextNow are the free routes, both tied to North America. Google Voice runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari ^[36], but its free plan has no emergency calling ^[37]. TextNow's free number and calls are paid for by in-app ads ^[25].

TwinPhone, which sponsors this site, suits someone outside the US who doesn't want to hand over a phone number. Calls run in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave and Safari, and an optional US, Canadian or Puerto Rican number from $3.19 a month takes incoming calls in the tab ^[20][38]. The downsides: no free calls or trial credit ^[39], a minimum top-up of $10 ^[40], UK mobiles and India dearer than on Yolla ^[7], no emergency calls ^[39], and "145+ countries" on one page against "165 destinations" on another ^[20][7].

Yolla, at yollacalls.com, has the lower published rates for India and UK mobiles ^[34][33], but the account starts from your phone number ^[27] and its terms rule out emergency calls ^[41].

Free web dialers handle a quick call. Besides PopTox's limits above, Call2Friends allows one or two free calls a day per IP address, with 120 seconds a call to the US area codes it lists ^[42][43]. Globfone's daily credit covers "a short call of a few minutes", but only after you confirm an email, verify a phone number by SMS and add a payment card ^[44].

On a phone, the plain answer is the phone's own dialer, which is what WhatsApp's keypad hands you anyway.
